Heavy Loads

A pallet stacked high with bricks is one of the toughest applications out there for stretch wrapping and the same goes for other heavy, sturdy products. Our customers have come to us with challenges like tall stacks of fertilizer bags, roof tiles, and concrete pavers. This type of pallet requires a strong stretch wrap, one that withstands sharp edges and has enough force to hold the load together during shipping. The consequences of a poor wrapping job are not only loss of product, but also, with such a heavy load, the potential for injury if a load topples over.

To suit this type of application, Phoenix Wrappers developed the dual film carriage system. Once pre-stretched, this dual film is nearly unbreakable. How does it work? The first step is to put slits in one of the stretch films, and run it through an adjustable roping system. The second film stays intact. The two films merge together in our pre-stretch machine creating a bonded film that’s ready for the job at hand.

Now, the film is applied to the pallet load with a high tension by our stretch wrapping machine. With each revolution, because of the high tension, less film is used in less time than a traditional wrapping machine. That’s what we call an efficient operation!

Our dual film carriage system can be added to any of our automatic or semi-automatic stretch wrappers. Our clients have used this system in the brick & block, nursery (bagged soil, fertilizer), and agriculture (hay bales) industries.

Pallet Jack Operations

Distribution centers are like highly sophisticated machines with dozens of moving parts. In pick and pack operations, a team of employees (many of them operating hand pallets) are often gathering products to be shipped on pallets. In this type of operation, the addition of an automatic stretch wrapper can make a huge difference in terms of speed and efficiency in the warehouse.

Yet, one of the problems our clients often face is incorporating a conveyor system that’s low enough to the ground to make it easily accessible for the pallet jack. For this application, Phoenix Wrappers had designed a low profile conveying system with a pallet jack ramp. The five-inch pass height accommodates pallet jacks, electric walkies and triple pallet riding trucks.

Paired with an automatic stretch wrapper, the conveyor system streamlines production resulting in increased production and efficiency, as well as stretch film and labor savings.

Top Custom Stretch Wrappers for the Bottling & Agricultural Industries

There are many reasons why a company might need a custom stretch wrapper. Perhaps your business has a unique application, unusual pallet or load size, special warehouse space considerations, or business model.

Custom Stretch Wrappers for Bottling

Sometimes described as “bottling air” one of the toughest stretch wrapping applications is pallets of empty PET bottles. It comes with a number of inherent challenges.

  1. Larger than Standard Pallet: PET bottles are most often palletized on extra-large pallets, typically 44 by 56 inches.
  2. Tall Loads: The PET bottles are usually stacked high, sometimes as high as 10 feet.
  3. High Rate of Production: Bottle loads are produced quickly, anywhere between 50 and 75 pallets per hour.
  4. Lightweight Product: There’s little weight to a pallet full of empty plastic bottles. Not only does the wrapping machine have to work fast, it has to do it gently so as not to crush the bottles.

This specific application challenges a standard stretch wrapping machine. A custom and forward-thinking solution is necessary. The versatile Phoenix PRRA Rotary Ring style wrapper can do the job, with specifications to suit this particular type of business.

The size of the rotary ring stretch wrapper can be adjusted based on the load type, addressing both the first and second challenges. To wrap fast and efficiently, the fully automatic rotary ring wraps the load from the bottom up, then cuts and secures the film tail. This not only saves time, but also saves money on stretch film. Saving more than 30+ feet of stretch film on each load adds up to thousands in savings over the course of a year.

Phoenix’s proprietary rotary ring technology allows the stretch film to be applied to the pallet with just enough tension to hold the load in place and protect it from the elements, while ensuring the force is not great enough to crush the empty bottles.

Available in two speeds, the PRRA-2100 can do up to 75 loads per hour while the PRRA-4000 can wrap up to 120 loads in a single hour.

Custom Stretch Wrappers for Produce & Agriculture

While there are some applications that require a stretch wrapping machine with special adjustments, others have to customize the wrap itself. Such is the case for this particular customization, which has applications in food packaging, pharmaceutical, and agricultural industries.

The ultimate goal for all stretch wrapping applications is to ensure the load arrives safely and in good condition. In the food, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries, there are special considerations. For example, sometimes the product is still warm when packaged (dog food, sauces, yogurt) and sometimes the product needs to breathe (i.e. fruits, vegetables, eggs, plants). In both cases, maintaining airflow is essential to prevent condensation or spoilage.

Traditional wrapping in these types of cases would risk damaging or spoiling the load during transport. In the past, clients have come to us with the problem of unfit packaging that delivers corroded, moldy, or soggy product. At best, this is poor presentation and, at worst, the product is useless for sale and consumption. And that can negatively impact your bottom line.

To suit this type of application, Phoenix Wrappers developed the Breathe Easy Film Slitter, an affordable solution that allows airflow throughout the load. The beauty of our solution is that it does not require special stretch film; it can be used with standard stretch film.

Here’s how it works. The Phoenix Breathe Easy Film Slitter cuts the film into three or more bands (width can be adjusted) and wraps the load. At the end of the cycle, the slitter stops, leaving a full sheet of stretch film to complete the wrap. The stretch film bands still secure the load with the proper load retention while allowing the product to breathe. It’s that simple. We’ve implemented this packaging innovation for several produce applications from apples to eggs.

Semi Automatic Vs. Fully Automatic: Which Stretch Wrapping Machine is Best For Your Needs?

Consistency and efficiency are two of the most important elements of successful packaging. Today, with the physical demands and inconsistencies that come with stretch wrapping by hand, companies are finding it easier to justify the purchase of stretch wrapping machines. However, they are still faced with the challenge of finding a stretch wrapping machine that complies with their unique operations.

Which type of stretch wrapping machine is best for your operations? To confidently answer this question, you must know the difference between semi and fully automatic pallet wrappers and understand the distinctive benefits of each.

In this post, we’ll explain the difference between these two types of stretch wrapping machines and help you better understand the key elements of each. Let’s get you on your way to finding the right stretch wrapping machine for your operations!

Semi Automatic Stretch Wrapping Machines

If you’re handling low-volume applications, a semi automatic stretch wrapper may be the best solution for you. These machines provide a safe method of unitizing loads, while providing a competent pallet load to fulfill your customers’ demands. Semi automatic stretch wrap machines require an operator to place the pallet loads on the stretch wrapper and apply the film tail to the load to initiate the cycle. After which, the stretch wrapper applies the film and wraps the pallet load.

These systems are normally used in low volume applications, with fewer than 20 loads per hour being wrapped. Even if your wrapping requirements are as few as 10 pallets per hour, the purchase of a stretch wrapper is easily justifiable.

There are 3 basic types of semi automatic stretch wrapping machines. In effort to help you determine which best meets you needs, here are the key features and functions of each:

  • Low Profile Turntable Stretch Wrappers: Best for pallet jack operations; these machines are designed with the turntable positioned less than 3 inches from the floor. Using a ramp, pallet jacks can easily place loads on this series.

  • High Profile Turntable Stretch Wrappers: This machine is designed specifically for forklift loaded applications. Compared to low profile turntable stretch wrappers, this turntable provides easier loading and positioning access because it is elevated. Poor pallets also do not end up dragging on the machine frame as can happen on a low profile system.

  • Overhead Rotary Arm Stretch Wrappers: Designed for heavy or unstable pallet loads (light, tall, and poorly constructed loads), this type of stretch wrapper allows loads to be easily wrapped while stationary on the floor. Three mounting configurations are available: Wall Mount, Floor Mount and Free Standing Gantry.

Automatic Stretch Wrapping Machines

Automatic stretch wrapping machines, on the other hand, require no operator intervention during the cycle. Loads are typically brought to the machine on a conveyor belt so that the machine can automatically begin wrapping. Fully automatic stretch wrappers interpret the height of each pallet load to the film carriage and ensure a professional and efficient wrap every time. The film is then cut and sealed to the pallet load, which exits the wrapping cycle to make room for other loads.

These systems are commonly used in higher volume applications, from 20 pallets per hour to up to 120 loads per hour being wrapped.

There are 4 specific functions that true automatic stretch wrapping machines must perform. To help you better understand these functions, we’ve put together an overview of each. To be truly automatic, the stretch wrapper must:

  1. HOLD… the tail of the film to start each stretch wrapping cycle, without the need of an operator to attach the stretch film to the load.
  1. WRAP… the product based on the wrapping parameters that the operator has set on the stretch wrapper control panel.
  1. CUT… the stretch film from the pallet load and secure it in a clamp. This way, the leading edge of the stretch film is properly positioned to allow subsequent pallets to be wrapped.
  1. APPLY… the tail end of the stretch film to the load. Positive film tail treatment ensures that the hanging edge does not unravel during transit to the customer.

Beware; as some semi automatic machines can have options and gadgets added to help give machines extra automation but do not properly provide all of these features. Here’s a simple way to test if a stretch wrapper is truly automatic: If at any time during the cycle you hope the film is in a certain position for the machine to work (instead of the machine positively locating the film in that position), then it is not a true automatic machine.

As an example, we have a useful option on semi automatics that allows the film to be torn off at the end of a cycle, so the operator does not have to cut the film. While this is a useful feature, the film tail at the end of the cycle is not wiped down, tucked, or sealed. It simply falls to the ground, where it starts a slow process of potentially unravelling.

There are also 4 basic types of automatic stretch wrapping machines. To help you determine which best meets you needs, here are some key features of each:

  • Rotary Ring: Rotary rings are unique because they rotate only the carriage itself, unlike a traditional turntable or rotary arm. Featuring a compact design, this stretch wrapper is suited for constant applications. The Phoenix PRRA Rotary Ring Pallet Wrapper reduces film costs dramatically when compared to conventional rotary arm and turntable stretch wrappers because it can start and stop the cycle anywhere on the load. Often these film savings alone can provide payback on the new machine in 3 years.

  • Conveyorized Rotary Arm: These machines eliminate the need to rotate the pallet being stretch wrapped. Whether dealing with heavy or unstable loads, it can quickly and efficiently be wrapped with this system. These machines are most commonly used in-line with the rest of the packaging line.

  • Conveyorized Turntable: This system offers a flexible and economical stretch wrapping solution for up to 50 loads per hour and 4,000-pound weight capacity. Featuring a compact design, this stretch wrapper is best when faced with tight fitting applications.

  • Non-Conveyorized Automatics: Operators just have to place the pallet on the stretch wrapper and pull the cord to begin the automatic cycle. This machine eliminates the need for operators to get off the forklift to stretch wrap pallets and is available for both low profile and high profile operations.
